Lighting and tyres: vital elements that are too often neglected

Every year, thousands of vehicles are on the road with faulty lighting or worn tyres, jeopardising everyone's safety.

In October 2024, during the «Lighting and tyres» campaign run by the’ACL in partnership with the French road safety authority, 5,307 vehicles were checked. vehicles across Luxembourg. The results are worrying: 21.4 % of cars had a low beam adjustment fault, and 7.8 % were fitted with tyres non-compliant.

Lighting: a question of visibility and reaction

Poorly adjusted or defective lighting considerably reduces the driver's visibility and increases the risk of dazzling other road users. Modern technologies such as adaptive LED headlights or matrix headlights provide better light distribution, but their effectiveness depends on precise adjustment. During the campaign, 1,138 vehicles required on-site adjustment, and 164 bulbs were faulty.

An A4 sheet links your car to the road

The contact surface between the tyres and the road is the size of an A4 sheet of paper. It is on this tiny area that all the braking, traction and steering forces are based. The campaign demonstrated the importance of bringing controls closer to motorists, with sessions organised in the car parks of shopping centres and partner local authorities.
