Lighting and tyres: vital elements that are too often neglected

Every year, thousands of vehicles are on the road with faulty lighting or worn tyres, jeopardising everyone's safety.

In October 2024, during the «Lighting and tyres» campaign carried out by the ACL in partnership with the Sécurité Routière, 5,307 vehicles were checked across Luxembourg. The results were worrying: 21.4 % of the cars had incorrectly adjusted dipped beam headlights, and 7.8 % were fitted with non-compliant tyres.

Lighting: a question of visibility and reaction

Poorly adjusted or defective lighting considerably reduces the driver's visibility and increases the risk of dazzling other road users. Modern technologies such as adaptive LED headlights or matrix headlights provide better light distribution, but their effectiveness depends on precise adjustment. During the campaign, 1,138 vehicles required on-site adjustment, and 164 bulbs were faulty.

An A4 sheet links your car to the road

The contact surface between the tyres and the road is equivalent to an A4 sheet of paper. It is on this tiny area that all the braking, traction and steering forces are based. Worn or badly inflated tyres compromise grip, increase braking distances and encourage aquaplaning. ACL reminds you that winter or all-season tyres marked «M+S» are compulsory as soon as winter conditions set in (snow, black ice, etc.).

The campaign demonstrated the importance of bringing roadworthiness tests closer to motorists, with sessions organised in the car parks of partner shopping centres and local authorities. The maintenance of lighting and tyres is not just a matter for the technical inspection: it must be regular and preventive. Checking tyre pressure, inspecting wear, adjusting lights and replacing bulbs are simple but essential steps.

A well-lit and well-shod car is synonymous with safety. ACL's figures show that there is still some way to go when it comes to raising awareness. Although often neglected, these elements are the silent guarantors of every journey. Investing in their maintenance means investing in everyone's safety.
