What is the history of Polestar?

Polestar’s roots lie in Swedish touring-car racing. The operation that became Polestar began as a racing team in 1996, later competing as Polestar Racing and developing performance upgrades for Volvo. Volvo Cars acquired Polestar’s road-car performance business in 2015, while the racing organisation continued separately as Cyan Racing. In 2017, Volvo Cars and Geely Holding launched Polestar as a standalone design-led electric-performance brand. The first model, the Polestar 1, was a low-volume plug-in-hybrid grand tourer with a carbon-fibre body and 609 hp. The Polestar 2 followed as the first volume battery-electric model, with customer deliveries beginning in 2020. The Polestar 3 expanded the range into larger electric SUVs, and the Polestar 4 adopted a lower SUV-coupé format without a conventional rear window. The Polestar 5 is a four-door electric grand tourer on Polestar’s bonded-aluminium architecture, with first customer deliveries planned for 2026. Used availability varies greatly: in Luxembourg, the Polestar 2 is much more likely than the newer models.

What should you check when buying a used Polestar?

Most used Polestars are software-dependent battery-electric cars, so mechanical condition, charging performance, digital functions and account transfer all matter. The rare Polestar 1 also needs specialist plug-in-hybrid and combustion-engine checks.

  • Inspect tyres for matching specification and even wear, then assess wheels, brakes, steering and suspension; high weight and performance can increase tyre and chassis costs.
  • Check the underbody and battery enclosure for impact damage and inspect body panels, glass and frameless doors for previous repair or poor alignment.
  • For a Polestar 1, use a specialist to inspect the petrol engine, hybrid system, high-voltage battery, charging equipment, carbon-fibre structure and complex dampers.

Which Polestar models are electric?

Polestar 2, 3, 4 and 5 are battery-electric. The Polestar 2 is a five-door fastback with single- or dual-motor versions; the Polestar 3 is a larger SUV; the Polestar 4 is a lower SUV coupé; and the Polestar 5 is a high-performance four-door grand tourer. Battery voltage, capacity, charge rate and motor output vary substantially between them and across model years. The Polestar 1 is the exception. It is a plug-in-hybrid GT combining a 2.0-litre petrol engine with electric motors and a rechargeable battery, so it is not a pure EV. For any battery-electric Polestar, compare real journey needs with WLTP range, charging curve, preconditioning, wheel choice and winter conditions, then verify the particular car’s software and battery documentation.

Which Polestar models should buyers compare?

Polestar 2

The Polestar 2 is a five-door electric fastback and the brand’s most established used model. Compare early front-wheel-drive cars with later rear-wheel-drive versions, then assess single versus dual motors, battery size, packs, options and software history.

Polestar 3

The Polestar 3 is a large electric SUV with rear- and all-wheel-drive powertrains and a more spacious, comfort-oriented layout than the Polestar 2. Its higher price, weight, wheel size and advanced chassis equipment make insurance, tyres and options important comparisons.

Polestar 4

The Polestar 4 is a lower electric SUV coupé offered with rear or dual motors and uses a camera-based digital rear view instead of a conventional rear window. Buyers should assess rear visibility, display ergonomics and luggage access alongside performance and charging.

Is buying a used Polestar worth it?

A used Polestar can suit buyers who want restrained Scandinavian design, strong electric performance and an infotainment system built around Google services. The Polestar 2 is the practical used-market entry point, while the 3 and 4 provide more space or a more expressive body shape. The rare Polestar 1 is a specialist hybrid GT rather than an everyday substitute for those EVs. The purchase is most convincing when charging access, software support and local service arrangements fit the buyer’s routine. Confirm account transfer, warranty, battery and charging evidence, tyres, options and repair history. Model year matters on the Polestar 2 because drivetrain layout and specifications changed, and a pre-purchase inspection is sensible for high-output dual-motor cars or any vehicle with underbody damage.

Tesla, BMW and Volvo cover overlapping electric-car needs but differ in charging ecosystems, controls, body styles, dealer support and driving character.

Tesla

Tesla is the direct technology-led alternative, with a mature charging ecosystem and different interface, ride and build priorities from Polestar.

Frequently asked questions about Polestar cars

Which used Polestar should you choose?+

For most used buyers, the Polestar 2 is the realistic starting point because it is more established and widely available. The Polestar 3 adds SUV space and comfort, while the 4 offers a lower coupé-like shape and digital rear view. The Polestar 1 is a rare plug-in-hybrid collector-style GT, not a direct substitute.

What should you check before buying a used Polestar?+

Verify warranty, service and software history, account ownership, keys, app pairing and every digital function. Test AC and DC charging, climate preconditioning, cameras, driver assistance, tyres and suspension. Inspect the battery enclosure and underbody carefully and seek specialist help if damage or incomplete records appear.

Are Polestar cars expensive to maintain?+

Electric routine servicing is limited, but total costs can still be high because of large tyres, performance brakes, complex suspension, glass and body parts. Insurance and repair access vary by model and country. Price these items in Luxembourg before buying, especially for dual-motor, Performance Pack or large-wheel cars.

How should you assess battery health on a used Polestar?+

Start with warranty status, charging records, software history and a qualified diagnostic report where available. The dashboard range estimate changes with temperature, recent driving and climate use, so it is not a standalone health measurement. A charging test and consistent consumption data are more useful alongside professional diagnostics.

Why did later Polestar 2 models change from front- to rear-wheel drive?+

Polestar revised the single-motor Polestar 2 for the 2024 model year with a new rear motor and rear-wheel drive, alongside battery and efficiency changes. Earlier single-motor cars drive the front wheels, while dual-motor versions use all-wheel drive. Buyers must identify model year and exact powertrain rather than relying on the badge alone.
